6th Graders,

This week marks the 1st week of the 3rd quarter and the start of Line Dance. I can't wait.

WEEKLY RECAP & WEEK AT A GLANCE

After a week of Frisbee and SMARTI goal setting, we are now ready to start Line Dance. Bring on the dancing shoes, the music and get the party started. Please check out your Google Calendar to see what is going on this upcoming week.

WEATHER

Looking like the only day of rain is going to be Monday, but, does not matter, because we will be inside for the next month (except Run and Fitness days of course)- check the weekly weatherHERE.

MILE & 2 MILE MAKE-UP RUN

Due to the dance and the closed campus, I had to cancel the make-up run for this Friday. The next after school run is going to be on February 10th at 3:00.

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?

Monday we start Line Dance. This is a super fun unit. Please, please watch all of the dances you will be responsible for learning and practice them. There is no reason you can not get an A+ on the end of the unit Line Dance Test. You will be responsible for learning and performing 6 line dances at the end of the unit. WHAT UNIT IS COMING UP NEXT?

After dance, you will have another pretty good unit- Track and Field.

WHAT IS OUR RUN THIS WEEK?

You will not have a run this week, instead, on Wednesday all 6th grade teachers will be kicking off your 3rd quarter nutrition project called, Exercise Your Options. If you want a sneak peak of of what the project is all about, click HERE. We will go into detail on Wednesday.

WHAT FITNESS ACTIVITY ARE WE DOING THIS WEEK?

Friday we are in the gym. We will have another version of the ABC workout. Be ready to sweat and be sore.

Did you know that bones are 4 times stronger than concrete....pretty crazy, isn't it. Imagine the force it takes to break bones, particularly the bigger ones in your body like the femur found in your thigh.

Tinikling Voting Results 2012

Hey 6th graders,

I just finished calculating all of the Tinikling Results.

The first reward was for the class that casted the highest % of votes which will earn students either 5 extra credit points or a mile run pass. Congratulations to 6th Period. 79% of the class casted votes. 3rd period was a close second at 71%. If just two more students had voted, you would have won.

The second reward is a Jamba Juice Party for the team that received the most votes from all of the votes casted. Congratulations to All Start Group #4 (5th period). Of 124 total votes casted, you received 32 total votes which was 26%. All Star Group #1 finished second with 25 total votes, 20%. Group 6 was right behind Group 1 with 23 total votes, 19%.

In summary,

All 6th period students get to choose 5 extra credit points or a mile pass for casting the most votes.
The 5th Period team of Emma, Kavin, Kevin, Erwan and Risa will receive a Jamba Juice party in a couple of weeks for receiving the most overall votes.

This is your final week. Can you believe it, after surviving this week (kidding) you will have the half the school year under your belt. Amazing.

The rain looks like it is going to finally arrive. The forecast is for showers on Thursday and Friday, be ready. Wear those jackets. Also, we are having a cold front move in and Tuesday is going to be a cold one- check the weekly weather HERE.

MILE & 2 MILE MAKE-UP RUN

This Friday after school is going to be the final make-up/extra credit run that will count for the 2nd quarter. It starts at 3 and will go till 3:45.

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?

We are finishing the Bear Challenge this week with the Mile Run. Other than that, we have a PE 101 lesson and another SMARTI goal lesson scheduled. This is going to be an easy week physically.

WHAT UNIT IS COMING UP NEXT?

On the first day of the new quarter, 1/23, you will be starting one of the best units of the year, Line Dance. I added a link on my website about Line Dance, including videos for each of the dances that you will be responsible for learning. I HIGHLY recommend you start watching the videos and practicing. I am not sure when the make up/extra credit runs will take place after school. There are some scheduling issues that I am trying to work through.

This week is the Bear Fitness Challenge. You will have Block A, B and C as well as the 2 mile run. This upcoming week is going to be physically demanding. Be sure to eat and rest well. Happy New Year. Can you believe that I will not see you again until 2012. I hope that each and every one of you had a great 2 weeks and 1 day off. My break was fantastic. Luckily, I still have 3 more days. I did spend a few of the days getting some work done, particularly adding all the Tinikling videos. Anyway, I can't wait to see you on Tuesday, 1/2. I am refreshed, recharged and ready to go.

This is the week that Progress/Deficiency Notices will be mailed home. I will have all grades in Pinnacle by end of day Tuesday which should give you time to ask about and fix your grades. I still have to add the 2 mile run grades, some Jump Rope stuff and participation grades.

How does the Heart Work? One of your Fitness Components, and arguably, the most important is the Cardiovascular/Cardiorespiratory System. The more you know about how the heart works, the better you can take of it and make sure that people you love take care of it.

PE 101 ON THURSDAY...

If you were absent on Thursday and missed the PE 101 Lesson on Aerobic and Anaerobic Training, you will be responsible for making this lesson up on your own. EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS

Go to the Jump Rope Page, look at the Advanced skills. Find a few that you think you can do and then practice them. If you can perform them consistently (for 10-20 seconds), come in and I will film you. You will receive 2 points/skill that you can perform up to 5 total skills = 10 points. There are some pretty amazing skill, check them out and see if you are coordinated and determined enough to figure them out.

As you get busier in your lives, it is more and more difficult to find time to get adequate amount of sleep. Why is sleep so important? How many hours of sleep should I get in a night? Is my sleep pattern different than that of an adult? All of these questions and more can be answered in this week's AOW- "How Much Sleep Do I Need?". Check it out and see what you think.

WEEK RECAP.....

This week was the final week of the quarter. Monday was spent dividing the classes into Basic and Intermediate groups. I worked with the Intermediate and then the Basic groups. Tuesday was the 10 station Jump Rope skill challenge circuit. Wednesday was the Popsicle Stick run. Thursday students were put in their Skill Test groups and stared to practice with their group members. Friday we did Rob The Nest.

MILE & 2 MILE MAKE-UP RUN

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?

We are in our last week of the Jump Rope Unit (I know that some of you will be relieved and others will be bummed). For those of you that may have lost your Routines given out in class, I posted them on the Jump Rope page. You can print them out. I included the Rubric as well.

JUMP ROPE EXTRA CREDIT

I love to get your family involved in what we are doing in PE, so, I am offering a great opportunity to earn 10 extra credit points. You need to teach a family member (younger or older sibling, parent, grandparent, cousin, aunt/uncle, etc.) 3 of our 5 required basic skills. After they have practiced and learned the skills, film them for 30 seconds. They will do 10 seconds of each skill. Bring that video clip to me on a flash drive/CD/DVD or email and I will give you 10 extra credit points. The family member DOES NOT have to be an expert, they just have to put in the effort. Have fun teaching them the skill and bring me some good video clips.

Every day thousands of teens wake up afraid to go to school. Bullying is a problem that affects millions of students, and it has everyone worried, not just the kids on its receiving end. Yet because parents, teachers, and other adults don't always see it, they may not understand how extreme bullying can get. Since Bullying is such a devastating thing for a student to go through, it is very, very important that make sure you know as much about Bullying as you can. Read this week's AOW dealing with Bullying to get some very good information.

WEEK RECAP.....

This was a great week. We started the week with a Zamzee presentation on Monday. Tuesday, we continued in our Jump Rope unit by going over the Benefits of Jump Roping Article, speed challenge and heart rate and rep graphs. We also went over all the Learning Targets. Wednesday we had our 2nd mile run of the year and many of you received 2 extra credit points for improving, congratulations. Thursday we continued working on the 5 Basic/required skills for Jump Roping. Friday was the ABC Workout in the gym for our fitness day.

I think it is fantastic to see how many students at our school bike to school. Biking is a fantastic form of exercise and is so good for the environment. However, biking can be dangerous of you don't follow some simple rules and guidelines. Here is a good article that discusses Bicycle Safety. WEEK RECAP.....

What a week. I hope that we never have to experience what we did on Wednesday. I wanted to personally thank each and every one of you for being brave and keeping your composure. Needless to say, Wednesday's events through off the tone of the week. Anyway, I was out on Monday and you had your Diabolo Assembly. You can buy a Diabolo in the girl's locker room. Tuesday, I had CPR training, therefore, missed half the day but was able to get Jump Rope in with 5th, 6th and 7th periods. Thursday was a rainy day of which I handed back and handed out a bunch of papers and then was able to practice a little jump rope. Friday, we did the Partner (Interval) Pacer.

DYK the brain uses 20-25% of the Oxygen that you consume. Does that mean, the more you breathe the smarter you are? Hum, that means exercise a lot so you breathe a lot so you can "feed" your brain more food. Good theory huh?

WEEK RECAP.....

This was definitely a strange week. I was out on Wednesday and Thursday, therefore, not much happened in class. On Monday, we finished the "Guess the Steps" partner pedometer activity. On Tuesday, we did a PE 101- Sportsmanship and 5 Fitness Components relay race. I was very happy with how all the teams worked together to solve the puzzle. On Friday, we did a lesson on "Exercise Intensity" where we looked at Heart Rate and RPE. Here are a couple of videos I made that I recommend you watch regarding heart rate; "Finding your Heart Rate" and the "Importance of Heart Rate and Exercise." We will continue this lesson soon.

BEAR CHALLENGE MAKE-UP

If you were unable to complete any activities in Block A, B or C, I will be conducting make up sessions at Brunch in the boys locker room, rock wall side on Monday, 9/12. Your fitness activity this week is going to be Bear Challenge Block C which will be done on Tuesday. Friday, our typical Fitness Day is going to be spent inside completing your SMARTI goals worksheet which is a goal setting lesson for your next Bear Challenge in January.

Most weeks, I am going to post an Article of the Week that is strickly for informational purposes. I try to find articles that may of be interest to you and your parents. I highly recommend you take some time to read these. They address all types of issues such as physical and mental health, nutrition, sleep, etc. I find that by reading these articles, I am a better educator and for you, these articles will help you make better decisions about your health and lifestyle.

Most teens need about 8½ to more than 9 hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep is essential for anyone who wants to do well on a test or play sports without tripping over their feet. Unfortunately, though, many teens don't get enough sleep. To read this entire article, click HERE.

Every week, you will be given a Word of the Week (WOW). At the end of the quarter, you will turn in a WOW paragraph using all of the words to demonstrate that you understand their meaning. The paragraphs need to be creative, interesting to read and most importantly, show that you understand the words. I will let you know when the paragraph is due. You will start your WOW next week.

Welcome to CMS. I hope that your transition to middle school has been smooth and exciting. The next 3 years are going to be amazing. I am excited to be teaching 6th grade this year. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask.

Here are a few important things to remember. REMEMBER, ALL OF THESE ARE DUE ON MONDAY, 8/29.

1. Don't forget to get a 1" clear binder and tab dividers. I am selling binders for $2.00 or handing out free, recycled binders from previous years.

2. Don't forget to read over your Class Contract with your parents and/or guardians and turn it in signed on Monday, 8/29.

3. Don't forget to fill out these online forms. They are not going to take long at all:

a. Student Tech Form

b. Student Information Form

4. Don't forget to set up your Sportfolio. Click on this link to see how.

5. Click here to check out your Google Calendar. I updated it to reflect the next couple of weeks. This schedule is tentative and subject to change because of our locker room issues right now.

6th Graders,

We are down to our final week and half of school, therefore, I am not going to send out a detailed blog. I am only including 2 very important announcements for assignments that are due this week:

1. As I discussed last week (and some this week), you will have your Fitness Testing Reflection Sheet due this week, on Thursday, 5/26 at roll call. What do you have to do to get this assignment done:

a). You have to use page 2-1, you Fitness Testing Scores sheet to complete this assignment.

b). On Monday, you will get pages 2-1 and 2-2 out of your Sportfolio, take them home, and

complete the ENTIRE Fitness Reflection Assignment (page 2-2).

c) When you turn them in, you will staple the reflection assignment to the back of your Fitness Testing Score Sheet.

Note: We will probably go in the Rock Wall on Wednesday so that I can give you time to

work on this assignment (if needed)

2. Your WOW paragraph is also due on Thursday. There are only 5 words. Keep the paragraph

very simple and to the point. If you staple the WOW template to the back of your paragraph

you will receive 3 extra credit points.

WEEK RECAP.....

Monday and Tuesday were spent working on Softball skills, specifically fielding ground balls, throwing and catching. Wednesday and Friday we did our end of the year Fitness Testing, finishing the following activities: 2 min bleacher steps and jump rope, 1 min tricep dips, wall sits and leg lifts as well all of the flexibility activities. We still have to complete the pull-up tests, ab and push-up plank tests. On Thursday, we did the 2 mile run. If you need to make it up, please come and see me.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK (AOW)

Dehydration is going to become a big factor in the next few weeks as we approach the real summer weather. This is a good article educating you on the effects and prevention of dehydration. It is completely preventable, but, it is up to you to be responsible.

What Is Dehydration?

Dehydration is a condition that occurs when someone loses more fluids than he or she takes in. Dehydration isn't as serious a problem for teens as it can be for babies or young children. But if you ignore your thirst, dehydration can slow you down.

Our bodies are about two thirds water. When someone gets dehydrated, it means the amount of water in his or her body has dropped below the level needed for normal body function. Small decreases don't cause problems, and in most cases, they go completely unnoticed. But losing larger amounts of water can sometimes make a person feel quite sick.. to read the full article, click HERE.

Week of 5/2/11-5/6/11 (4Q- Week 5)

6th Graders,

Well, it has been a crazy 2 weeks for me as my wife and I waited for the arrival of our second daughter. Natalie Elyse was officially born on Tuesday, April 26th at around 10:35am. She was a whopping 6 lbs and 10 ozs with huge muscles like her dad. In fact, right after she was born, she wanted to a run a mile. Crazy. As it was with my first daughter it was an amazing experience and am so excited to add a new member to our family.

Because of the crazy schedules from STAR testing last week and this week, I have not updated the Google calendar. I am not sure what we

will be doing this week. All activities will be planned as the week goes on, including the run and fitness days. I want to see what everyone else is doing in the department and plan from there.
