Week of 5/21/12-5/25/12 (4th Quarter-Week 8)


6th Graders,


We had an interesting week.  Sharks and Minnows on Monday, Stealth on Tuesday, HR and FC Worksheet on Wednesday, Mile Run on Thursday and a Bear Fitness 100 Rep Challenge.  Next week is Bear Fitness Challenge Week.

HR and FC WORKSHEET
On Wednesday in the Multi-Use room we went over the the Heart Rate and Fitness Component Worksheet.  This is par of your PE 101 curriculum.  This worksheet is due on Tuesday, 5/22.  You can find the link to the worksheet on your 6th Grade HW sheet.  Scroll to the bottom in the 4th Quarter box.

MILE & 2 MILE MAKE-UP RUN
There will be a make-up run on June 7th in class where you can make up any type of run you missed in class.  I am going to also hold a make up run after school next week sometime.

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?
This upcoming final unit will be a Blender Mix of a bunch of stuff.  Most of it will be Cooperative Activities/Challenges and Sportfolio work getting you ready for next year.  It has been a while since we have been able to discuss PE 101 and go over some of the missing work in the Sportfolio.  Be prepared for anything.  I will do my best to keep my Google Calendar updated if you are really curious about what is going on.  

You will have the BEAR FITNESS CHALLENGE starting on Monday, 5/21.  (Read the next section).  

BEAR FITNESS CHALLENGE
It has been a while since we did the Bear Fitness Challenge.  In fact, I think it was January.  You will have your 3rd Bear Fitness Challenge a week from Monday.  IT IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT that you review the exercises.  We will spend some time this week going over the exercises, but, I want you to practice them as well.  Here is the link to the Bear Fitness Challenge page.  Here is the link to theinstructional videos for the Bear Fitness Challenge so that you can watch and review. 

WHAT IS OUR RUN THIS WEEK?
You will have the Bear Fitness Challenge 2 Mile Run.  Your goal is to run the fastest 2 mile that you have run all year.    

COMMENT ON THE MILE RUN THIS PAST WEEK!!!
I am very impressed with the number of you that improved to your fastest mile run of the year.  In fact, I was looking at your graphs comparing your first mile of the year (back in September) to your mile run this past week and it was amazing how much many of you improved.  I was also impressed with how easy the mile run looked for most of you.  I can't wait to see what you achieve in 7th and 8th grade.  Great job!!!

WHAT FITNESS ACTIVITY ARE WE DOING THIS WEEK?
Your fitness this week is the Bear Fit Challenge.  There is no school on Friday or Monday.

Yoga is a great form of fitness.  Many of us have some serious flexibility issues as well as muscular endrance, therefore, Yoga kills both of those issues with 1 stone.  Check out this article on yoga and see what you think.

6th Graders,


Congratulations, you made it through the Tumbling Unit.  Most of you did very, very well and I was happy to see that you were able to perform skills you struggled with in practice.  It shows that if you work hard enough at something, you can accomplish almost anything.  Nice job.

As we get close to summer, kids start to worry more and more about their body image.  Body image can effect self-esteem.  This is a good article the discusses Body Image and Self-Esteem.  Take some time to read this, it is good.

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?
We are in our third week of Tumbling. You will be tested on your memorized routines starting on Tuesday. You will be given the entire period in Monday to practice. Hopefully you have been practicing at home as well.

WHAT UNIT IS COMING UP NEXT?
The unit after Tumbling will the one that will finish the year. I have a lot of stuff planned, like your final Bear Fitness Challenge, SMARTI Goal Setting, Fitness Plan. In addition, I want to do a little Juggling and Cooperative Games. Basically, the final unit will be a pot of mixed stuff.

BEAR FITNESS CHALLENGE
On Monday, 5/14 we are scheduled to start the Bear Fitness Challenge Block A. However, that may change to the 21st. Regardless, I need you to go to the Bear Fitness Challenge page and review the exercises and the Blocks. Also, we need to review your SMARTI Goals and make sure that you can accomplish them.

Week of 4/30/12-5/4/12 (4Q-Week 4)


6th Graders,


As you probably already know, Monday is the start of 2 days of STAR State Testing for you.  Your Monday and Tuesday schedules are going to be quite unusual.  Your 1st Period teacher will go over the entire schedule with you. I have the schedule in the Blog as well below.   Make sure that you get good rest and eat very well today, tonight and tomorrow.  It is important to feel totally alert and focused when taking these state tests.  Be patient, read all questions slowly and carefully and you will do fantastic.  

STAR SCHEDULE SUMMARY
On Monday you have 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th periods.  On Tuesday, you have 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th periods.  The detailed schedules will be given to you by your 1st period teacher.

I try and send out this article every year to hopefully give you some good advice on Test Taking preparation.  The START testing can be very stressful for students and by just relaxing, eating well and getting good sleep...you should do fine.  However, here is a good ARTICLE that give good advice.

Week of 4/23/12-4/27/12 (4Q-Week 3)


6th Graders,

I hope that you had a very refreshing and much needed break.  More importantly, I hope that you were able to be outdoors and spend active time with family and friends.

MILE & 2 MILE MAKE-UP RUN

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?
A brand new unit starts up this week, Tumbling.  This particular unit is going to be much different than in the years past because a bunch of new skills will be added that include Balance and Strength in addition to all the rolls that you will learn.  My student teacher, Miss H, is designing the unit and will be teaching it to 2nd and 3rd period.  Although the unit is changing a lot, I still recommend that you check out the Tumbling page that I have made to get an idea of what the rolls will like this.  For many of you, the rolling part of the unit will be the most dangerous and difficult.  If you have the facility at home (soft grass, thick carpet, etc.) where you can practice the rolls, I recommend that you watch my instructional videos on the page and practice them.  The link for all of your Tumbling information is HERE.

WHAT UNIT IS COMING UP NEXT?

We are scheduled for the Rock Wall, but, since Miss H is responsible for designing this week's fitness day, I am not sure where we will be and what we will be doing.  Be prepared for anything.

Week of 4/9/12-4/13/12 (4Q-Week 2)

6th Graders,

Happy Easter and Happy Passover. What a big weekend. Hopefully you are getting good family time and enjoying the beautiful weather. This is the perfect weekend to get outside and be active (hike, bike ride, run, etc.)

WEEKLY RECAP & WEEK AT A GLANCE
Last week our focus was on Overhand Throwing. Monday and Tuesday you threw with implements (TrackBall and HiLi Scoops). Wednesday was using Throwing to generate different levels of force with your body. Thursday, I had a sub and he did the Figure 8 run. Friday we finished the Rock Wall 20 Station Fitness Circuit.

WEATHER
Strangely, after this beautiful weekend, looks like a full week of light rain and showers. Dress warm. Check the weekly weather HERE.

The week after Spring Break is going to be when we start the Tumbling Unit. For a lot of you, you will do well in the unit and for many of you, you will struggle. We are in the process of changing/adding/enhancing some of the skills required in the unit, however, rolls are a very big component of the unit.
